The State University of New York, or SUNY, is the largest system of public colleges and universities in the United States. It offers academic degrees at every level, with affordable tuition, to give everyone an opportunity to succeed. SUNY is in every region of the state, and more than one-third of people working in New York hold a SUNY degree.

What is SUNY?

SUNY is the State University of New York. Unlike most colleges and universities, it’s not just one school. SUNY is the largest comprehensive university system in the US with 64 colleges and universities across New York State. This means that every New Yorker is within 30 minutes of a SUNY institution.  

SUNY is not the same as CUNY. Both SUNY and CUNY are New York State public institutions, but CUNY is New York City’s public university system. SUNY has 64 colleges throughout New York State. CUNY has 25 colleges throughout New York City and its boroughs.

Is SUNY respected?

In a word – yes. SUNY is highly regarded and respected not only in New York but globally as well. The SUNY system was established in 1948, with campuses dating as far back as 1816, and has produced millions of alumni around the world. One-third of New York’s workforce has a SUNY degree, and 25% of academic research in New York State is done at SUNY.  

What is SUNY known for?

SUNY is known for its impact on New York State and its commitment to providing a high-quality, affordable college education for all. SUNY has been recognized for its COVID response, access to mental health, diversity, value, academic quality, and research. With opportunities for all to succeed, SUNY is a true New Yorker.

SUNY schools are consistently ranked among the best in New York and in the nation from various companies such as Forbes and US News and World Report. SUNY is home to NY’s top colleges, highly ranked programs, recognized and awarded faculty, and ground-breaking research.

The best school at SUNY is the college or university that meets your needs and helps you achieve your goals. SUNY has every degree or training program, with 7,000 programs and thousands of courses. The expansive list of colleges at SUNY offers students the opportunity to:

- Enroll in free skills training
- Learn a trade or vocation

Is SUNY only in New York?

SUNY’s 64 colleges and universities are in New York State, with the addition numerous opportunities to study abroad. But New Yorkers are not the only ones who can attend SUNY. SUNY welcomes out-of-state students, international students, and online learners. Many alumni come back to SUNY as well for advanced degrees and training, even after moving away from campus or out of state.

Is SUNY free?

Students who earn a degree at SUNY may be eligible for free tuition through the Excelsior Scholarship. Three out of four SUNY students receive financial aid, and 47.5% of students graduate with $0 federal student loan debt.
