PUTIN'S WAR: "This puts Germany in great danger!" Sahra Wagenknecht sounds the alarm
BSW chairwoman Sahra Wagenknecht sees the limited release of Western weapons for targets in Russia as a conscious calculation of a "global war". Wagenknecht said on the news channel WELT TV: "We are taking the war to Russia, but whoever takes the war to Russia runs the risk of taking it to Germany as well. I think that is irresponsible." Wagenknecht accused Ukraine of aggressive action against Russia, which, in her view, could become even worse with Western weapons and could even provoke a nuclear war:
"We see that Ukraine has already launched massive attacks on infrastructure and civilian infrastructure in Russia in recent months and weeks. If the reports are correct, it has now even attacked the early warning system of the strategic nuclear forces in Russia twice. Such attacks massively increase the risk of a global nuclear war. They actually have nothing directly to do with the war in Ukraine. But they have enormous potential for escalation. And when I imagine that such attacks will take place in the future with German weapons, I am terrified."
Wagenknecht considers the release of German weapons for defensive use against targets on Russian territory to be "highly dangerous": "We don't know how the Kremlin will react. There are warnings. Some say: 'OK, they've been threatening for a long time.' But to me that seems a bit like someone jumping from the 40th floor of a skyscraper and then, as they fly past the tenth floor, saying: 'Everything's gone well so far!' At some point it can actually go very wrong." There is "a real danger that Europe will be drawn into this war, that it will come to Germany and that many more people will die," says Wagenknecht. "And I find it so irresponsible that this is simply being taken into account." In fact, it is "about the danger of a global war, a major European war. We simply cannot accept that."
Wagenknecht wants to see a serious interest in peace negotiations on the part of the government in Moscow. "I hope that we finally take up the signals that are coming from the Kremlin that they are ready for a ceasefire, that they are ready for peace negotiations. Let's see what we can do." In any case, the release of weapons will not make a solution at the negotiating table any easier, says Wagenknecht: "The more the war escalates, the more difficult it will be to resolve it diplomatically. We already had relatively promising negotiations in Istanbul. I believe that Ukraine could have achieved a much better peace agreement then than is possible now. The worse this war gets, the bigger it gets and the more it escalates, the more difficult it will be to end it diplomatically."
