THINKING SONGS is an extremely virtuosic piece for marimba featuring a wide variety of techniques and timbres, complex counterpoint, and influences from various African xylophone traditions. It was commissioned by a consortium of 16 marimbists convened by Eric Cha-Beach and consisting of (Joe Bergen, Eric Cha-Beach, Edward Choi, Kevin Clarke, Gwen Dease, Haruka Fujii, Barrett Hipes, Laura Jordan, Ji Hye Jung, Ayano Kataoka, Eduardo Leandro, Peter Martin, Todd Meehan, William Moersch, Doug Perkins, and Greg Zuber).

The world premiere took place on June 14, 2015 at Roulette in Brooklyn, NY, with Eric Cha-Beach, Laura Jordan, Ji-Hye Jung, and Ayano Kataoka each performing different movements. The movements can also be performed individually.
