What is phonics and why is it so important for helping children learn to read?
Phonics is a method of instruction that helps children learn, and be able to use, the alphabetic principle – the concept that words are made up of letters, and letters represent sounds.

The English alphabet has 26 letters to represent 44 spoken sounds. Children learning to read need to crack the ‘code’ and learn specific letter combinations (graphemes) that represent spoken sounds (phonemes).

Synthetic phonics is the process in which words are broken up into the smallest units of sound, phonemes. These can be sounds made from single-letter or multiple-letter combinations.
The phonics method is recommended by literacy experts as the most effective way to teach children how to read and is one of the five essential components of learning to read.

Reading Eggs is the multi-award winning online reading program for ages 2– 13. The program explicitly teaches children how to decode words into letter sounds, as well as how to encode sounds into words. Of course, there are some words used frequently in the English language that are too short to be broken into smaller parts. These are called high-frequency sight words.

Alongside phonics, Reading Eggs also teaches children to recognise high-frequency sight words in a sequenced curriculum.
