Scanned maps, aerial photographs and satellite images are some of the popular raster data sources. But scanned maps don't have geographic reference information and aerial or satellite images often have inadequate spatial location data. In such cases, the images don't image with other images of the same or neighboring locations. Thus, we have to georeference our data. Georeferencing is a mathematical transformation technique of aligning a dataset with a coordinate system by assigning coordinate values to the pixels. Then the georeferenced data can be viewed, analyzed and queried with other spatially referenced data.

In this tutorial, we learn how to Georeference an image to a referenced layer (vector or raster) in ArcMap.
