Malaysia's 'Proton' car manufacturer is celebrating its tenth birthday this year.

Today, seven out of ten cars on Malaysian roads are Protons, the first national car made by state-controlled Perusahaan Otomobil Berhad (Proton).

The success of Proton is seen as a prime example of the strength of Asia's emerging economic tigers.

Proton, Malaysia's national car maker, is making giant strides as it celebrates its 10th year.

Sales continue to soar despite some heavy competition from newer car makers.

The company, a joint-venture with Japan's Mitsubishi Corporation, continues to plan new models and has mapped out strategies to expand beyond Malaysian shores.

SOUNDBITE:
Definitely it is going to be very, very challenging for Proton. It is not an easy task for everyone in Proton to face the challenges of the automotive industry because we cannot pack ourselves with the local players. We have to benchmark ourselves among the world producers.

Proton's main plant in Shah Alam, an industrial city south of Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur, makes 160-thousand cars annually.

That's double what it made 10 years ago.

The state-of-the-art Proton plant is Asia's most modern car-making facility outside Japan, and is considered a centre piece of Malaysian technology.

And demand is high.

The waiting list for a Proton in Malaysia is between three and six months.

Nevertheless, as the company purchases some of its parts from Japan, the appreciating yen has caused a second year of financial decline.

SOUNDBITE:
We are not free from the influence of the yen because the raw materials and the child parts are also being imported from Japan. And some of the components we are also importing from Japan. But the full impact of the yen is less comparatively to others.

Despite the sluggish profits, Proton is expanding its stable of models to cater to Malaysia's booming market and newer markets offshore.

It is scheduled to sign a pact with Automobile Citroen on September 12th for the production of a new range of cars.

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, for whom Proton is a pet project, launched the new 1.8 litre model.

And, with a big thumbs up - Proton launches into it's 10th year.
