Rare cancer traced to synthetic estrogen: Commemorating Arthur Herbst's breakthrough, DES Daughters

Commemorating Arthur L Herbst and the 40th Anniversary of His Landmark paper on DES and adenocarcinoma. D.E.S. (Diethylstilbestrol) is an early synthetic form of a hormone in the estrogen class, was once widely prescribed to prevent miscarriages and premature births.

Dr Herbst found that daughters of mothers who took DES during the first trimester were at a significantly more likely to develop a rare cancer. An accompanying editorial to his published paper described it as a work of “great scientific importance and serious social implications."
