'The Sorrows of Young Werther' (1774) is an epistolary novel by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Discovered by chance by Edgar Wibeau, a young man, who wants to escape from his small middle class environment by living in a garden shed in Berlin, becomes a tool for Edgar to make sense of his feelings as well as a verbal weapon to provoke others. Initally repelled by its dated language, Edgar starts to discover similarities between Werther and himself when he falls in love with Charlotte, who is just about to get married.
