Day of the eruption
Toutle River
As the sun began to fade on the day of the eruption the effects of the event were being witnessed throughout the region surrounding the mountain.
The heat of the explosion and eruption melted the glaciers on the face of the volcano. As the people of the area watched in awe of the mountain continuing it's expulsion of steam and ash 30 miles away, they stood on the banks of the Toutle river as it became a torrent of mud and debris of collapsed hillsides, cut timber and parts of entire forests that were slamming through the river system.
