During the First World War, chemical warfare was employed on a large scale for the first time, and various toxic gases were used as weapons. The most infamous and widely used gas during the war was chlorine gas, followed by phosgene and mustard gas. These gases caused immense suffering and casualties, and their use marked a significant escalation in the brutality of warfare.
Chlorine gas was the first chemical agent used by the Germans in April 1915 during the Second Battle of Ypres. It was a yellow-green gas that, when released, formed a dense cloud that drifted towards the enemy positions. Chlorine gas is heavier than air, and it would sink into the trenches and shell holes, where soldiers had little protection. It attacked the respiratory system, causing choking, coughing, and severe damage to the lungs. Chlorine gas was effective at causing panic and disarray among the enemy forces but was limited by the wind direction and speed.
