US President Joe Biden was combative at the start of the NATO anniversary summit - his speech to the assembled international allies was aimed not least at the domestic audience and was intended to curb doubts about his mental fitness for the presidency. Meanwhile, at a meeting of Biden's Democrats in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, there were no signs of widespread opposition to Biden's bid for a second term.
At 81, the oldest president in US history has been facing a fierce debate within his own party about his intellectual abilities since his disastrous performance in a televised duel with his likely election challenger Donald Trump at the end of June. In his speech in Washington to mark the 75th anniversary of NATO, Biden then spoke energetically and largely without slips of the tongue - although unlike the TV duel, he read the speech from a teleprompter.
