NAMASTE my friends from Mumbai, India 🇮🇳 After nine years, Mother India welcomes me for a second time and I am more than happy to start my India series!
Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is India's financial, commercial, and entertainment capital. Located on the west coast, it's a vibrant melting pot of cultures and cuisines. As the home of Bollywood and iconic landmarks like the Gateway of India, the city juxtaposes modern skyscrapers with historical architecture.
I started my day at the Gateway of India in Colaba, a southern district of Mumbai. The Gateway of India is an emblematic landmark representing the city's rich history and maritime legacy. Erected in 1924, this majestic monument was designed to commemorate the 1911 visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India. Historically, it served as the ceremonial entrance for viceroys and new British governors. Beyond its architectural splendor, it's a poignant reminder of India's colonial era.
From Colaba, we are heading towards the slums of the district Cuff Parade. In the shadow of Mumbai's glittering skyscrapers of Cuffe Parade lurks its underbelly: the Ambedkar Nagar slum. A stark embodiment of the city's sinister socio-economic divides, this enclave houses those pushed to the fringes. Within its narrow, murky alleys, residents, often overlooked by the city's elite, scramble daily for basic necessities, their survival at stake. The opulence nearby mocks their plight. Though talk of redevelopment occasionally surfaces, it's often tinged with dark undertones of displacement and erasure.
