Photosynthesis in Higher Plants: WHAT IS LIGHT REACTION :The significance of light reaction in photosynthesis is to drive out the electrons from water molecule to reduce NADP+ to NADPH and to provide energy to form ATP from ADP + Pi.Light phase is a light induced physical change. It involves 2 processes – photolysis of water and photophosphorylation.Photolysis of water:  photo = light, lysis = splitting. Splitting of water molecule into H+ and OH-in the presence of Mn and Cl by activated chlorophyll.Chlorophyll molecule absorbs a quantum of red light and releases energy rich electrons. Chlorophyll molecule is oxidized and this state called activated state or oxidized state. In the presence of activated chlorophyll water splits into H+ and OH-The liberated electrons are accepted by the activated chlorophyll molecule, there by it becomes stable.
Summary: Plants prepare their own food by the process of photosynthesis.
 During photosynthesis CO2 & H2O are transformed into simple carbohydrates with the release of O2 into the atmosphere.
 Chlorophyll, light, and CO2 are essential for photosynthesis.
 Mesophyll cells of the leaf has large number of chloroplasts that are responsible for CO2 fixation.
 The membranes of the chloroplasts are the sites for light reaction, while chemosynthetic pathway occurs in stroma.
 Mechanism of photosynthesis can be divided into 2 phases: Light reaction & Dark reaction.
 During light phase photosynthetic pigments absorb radiant energy & convert it into chemical energy which is stored in the form of ATP & NADPH. These 2 components constitute assimilatory power.
 During dark reaction, assimilatory power produced in the light reaction are utilized for reducing CO2 to carbohydrate. Based on the first stable product, CO2 fixation is classified into C3 cycle & C4 cycle.
