A microscope is the laboratory instrument used to see small objects (microorganisms) that are invisible to the naked eye. In 1609 Galileo Galilei first invented microscope, Zacharias Janssen developed the concept of a compound microscope.
Anton Van Leuwenhoek is considered the founder of the study of microscopy. He is known as Father of Microscopy & Father of Microbiology.
Microscopes broadly are classified as Light Microscope and Electron Microscope. Compound Microscope, Phase contrast Microscope, Dark filed Microscope uses light sources; Electron Microscope uses electron beams.
Parts of a Compound Microscope are Ocular lens or Eyepiece (10X), Objective lenses (4X, 10X, 40X, and 100X objective lenses), Coarse adjustment knob, Fine adjustment knob, Mechanical Stage, condenser, Iris diaphragm, etc.
The resolution of a microscope is more important than its magnification power. The resolution of a microscope is the smallest distance at which two small objects can still be seen as separate objects. It is determined by the numerical aperture of the lens and the wavelength of the light used.
