Author Mark Kozak-Holland discusses the History of Project Management, why this book was written and why it is important to the business and the project management community. The book has taken 5 years to complete, and is the most ambitious in the Lessons from History series.

The book takes a hard look at the History of Project Management, how it evolved, and presents some quite remarkable results. Namely, that project management did not just appear in the last 100 years but has been a steady evolution for at least 4,500 years.

Mark explains it is time to reset many of the misperceptions about project management particularly those associated with ancient projects. The most common misperceptions about ancient projects are they were driven by overbearing leaders, had a slave workforce, unlimited budgets, and extended time lines. Other misperceptions include that Scope Management was not understood till the 17th Century. In reality without Scope Management none of the ancient projects could have been delivered.

There are no previous detailed studies on the History of Project Management. The book is based on the latest archaeological work, and modern research using sleuthing and forensic science. It uses the latest research work from Egyptologists Mark Lehner and Bob Brier, and Jean-Pierre Houdin (internal ramp theory). And from:
- The Parthenon restoration project
- Professor Ahmet Çakmak work on Hagia Sophia
- Architect John Fitchen work on the building of the Gothic cathedrals

One of the major findings of the book is that project management has been practiced since the beginning of civilization. The book shows that the core concepts of project management, as exemplified by the nine PMBOK Knowledge Areas, were known and understood for at least 4,500 years
.
Not surprising as our view of projects like Giza and Colosseum has been shaped through an architectural and engineering lens. So we tend to view these output as architectural wonders or engineering marvels.

The History of Project Management examines ancient projects from 2500 BC to 1940 to create a baseline for comparing today's projects and bring a wealth of lessons.
