The life of Andrea Dworkin, a controversial figure in the feminist sex wars, is presented through her own writing and speeches.
The question of who we are and how we treat others lay at the heart of Andrea Dworkin’s fierce opposition to pornography and life-long commitment to fighting gender-based violence. The feminist sex wars, of which she was a prominent and divisive participant, remain a point of fascination because two schools of feminist thought diverged, with the sex-positive school having largely won. But what was left behind? By presenting Dworkin’s own voice – and those of a few critics – pioneering director Pratibha Parmar asks us to re-examine what was at stake for feminists in the late twentieth century. The result is far from black and white, and this powerful meditation on a woman whose life was blighted by violence provides a deep and necessary pause for thought.
