Organic molecules are structurally characterized through spectroscopic techniques. Chemical structures of simple molecules can be elucidated with the help of NMR and Mass spectrometry only, these being the most powerful analytical tools used for the purpose. However, for more complex molecules, other techniques, such as IR, UV/visible spectroscopies and sometimes X-ray crystallography may also be needed.
