Use Excel's COUNTIF function when
Use Excel's COUNTIF function when you need to know the number of times a word/number/date appears in a range of cells. For example how many times does the word "Yes" appear in the range A1:A100? How many times does the value in B5 appear in the range A1:A100?
Combine multiple COUNTIF functions within the same formula to answer questions like "how many people bought Product A or Product B or Product C?"
The COUNTIFS function is used when you have multiple criteria and want to count how many items match all criteria (a logical AND), for example "how many customers bought Product A in the first quarter of 2022?"
In addition to explaining and demonstrating the difference between COUNTIF and COUNTIFS, this video covers the special syntax for dates, how to count within a range of numeric values and date values (i.e. between) and how to use wildcard characters (partial matches).
