An Indian politician Chandra Shekhar served as the eighth Prime Minister of India from 1990 to 1991. He is the first and only Indian Prime Minister who has never held any Government office before prime ministership. Chandra Shekhar’s government was formed with the fewest party MPs in the Lok Sabha and was largely seen as a "puppet" and "lame duck”.
During his tenure as the Prime Minister of India, Chandra Shekhar authorised mortgaging of gold to avoid a default of payment which led to a lot of criticism as it was done secretly during the time of the election. Chandra Shekhar’s government dove into crisis during the Indian economic crisis in the year 1991, and the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
