In today's video I take on the dreaded scourge of the surplus firearms world... cosmoline!

Seriously if you have any interest in vintage surplus firearms you've surely come across this stuff. It's a preservative applied (quite liberally I must say) to many firearms and other pieces of military equipment as a rust barrier.

When fresh or warmed up it has the consistency of Vaseline. However over time as it dries out it becomes a thick waxy substance that's very difficult to remove.

In this video I have a 1957 Chinese SKS rifle produced at the revered Jianshe Machine and Tool Company Arsenal. This was one of the first batch of independent domestically produced SKS rifles by the Chinese shortly following an initial batch of introductory rifles produced with Soviet assistance.

This thing was pretty thoroughly coated in cosmoline. Underneath however was a mechanically sound, albeit cosmetically ugly rifle. I'll clean the cosmoline off, refinish the wood stock and hand guard, re-blue some of the metal parts and reassemble the rifle.

This rifle also holds some secrets as the butt of the stock has an Albanian two-holed butt plate and two bores int he wood itself. Only Albanian SKS rifles had this feature but the stock is clearly not birch wood. It's definitely catalpa wood.

It's not a 100% restoration as I wasn't trying to make it a flawless specimen,  but more of a respectful preservation of that was already there, while trying t respect some of the unique history this rifle has.

I hope you enjoy the video!
