Driving what some consider Finland‘s most incredible road – the narrow ridgeways of Route 62 between Puumala and Mikkeli in Finnish Lakeland – the largest lake district in Europe!

Finland’s Route 62 between Puumala & Mikkeli is awash with beautiful beaches, gorgeous green forests, forgotten windmills, former logging communities turned holiday resorts, isolated trails, national parks and miles and miles of lakeside driving courtesy of the wide-open roads that form Route 62. All of this with no other tourists in sight!

My day started in Puumala where I visited some of the ubiquitous Salpa Line defences just a stone's throw from where I was staying. After that I hit the road but was soon distracted by the appearance of an old wooden windmill on the roadside called Luukkosenkylä Windmill (Luukkosenkylän Tuulimylly). It was built by local craftsmen and was built in 1859. To my surprise it was unlocked so I ventured inside for a look.

Further along Route 62, I stopped to take a look around the Sahanlahti Resort which was a historic sawmill community established in the 1740s. Remnants of its former glory remain, including flumes connecting the mill to the lake, and some old wooden buildings – one of them containing a museum.

I then found a deserted swimming lake at Pistohiekka Beach (Pistohiekan Ranta) which included an abandoned camping ground and a picturesque sandy beach. It was then time to drive the most impressive section of the Lietvesi Scenic Route (Lietveden Maisematie).

This part of Route 62 it’s a winding tarmac road along a narrow ridge that protrudes from the lake. It passes over some small rocky islands, a few bridges and is a contender for one of Finland‘s most spectacular driving routes – perfect for any road trip. Whilst in the area, I’ll show you my hire car and tell you how much I paid for a week’s rental.

The adventure continued as I passed by an area known as the Saimaa Geopark (Haukkovuoren Jyrkänteet) and continued west towards Anttola and its sweet little wooden church (Anttolan Kirkko), which was unquestionably worthy of a short stop.

I made it to Mikkeli  just before sunset and was just in time to take a quick self-guided walking tour of the city centre, although I did also stop briefly at the city Park (Mikkelipuisto) on route. I was able to see Mikkeli Cathedral (Mikkelin Tuomiokirkko), Mikkeli Harbour (Mikkelin Satama) & a little known free viewing area close to Naisvuori Observation Tower (Naisvuoren Näkötorni).
