Nilla Pizzi – Arrivederci Roma
Nilla Pizzi – Arrivederci Roma (Giovannini-Garinei-Rascel), RCA Victor 1955 (USA product)
NOTE: Adionilla (“Nilla”) PIZZI (b. 1919 in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Emilia-Romagna, Italy – d. 2011 in Segrate, Lombardy, Italy). Italian singer and actress particularly famous in the 1950s and 1960s. As a teenager, she performed in provincial ballrooms in Emilia-Romagna (the northern region of Italy). At the age of 18, she won a singing competition and signed a contract with the radio station EIAR. In 1944, however, the contract was terminated on the grounds her voice was “overly sensuous” and repertoire “unsuited to wartime requirements”. After the war she returned to the stages and was very popular, and in 1947 Nilla Pizzi signed an exclusive contract with the influential record label CETRA. She won the first edition of the San Remo festival in 1951, singing 'Grazie dei fiori', and also won the second edition (1952), becoming one of the top younger Italian singers of the time. However, in the 1960s, new trends in pop music hindered her career nevertheless, she continued to perform on smaller stages for her fans in the following decades, releasing new hits. She also became a television personality, and in the new editions of the San Remo song festival she appeared as a host.
