This was one of the most memorable time of my life, spending sunset at the Galuru Beach (East Woody) and listening to Djakapurra Munyarryun from the Yolngu tribe singing some songlines, together with Kevin, the yidaki (didgeridoo) player. I was here in residence to study the indigenous Aboriginal music for my orchestral work, The Voyage to Marege' , commissioned as a gift for the Indonesian Independence month on August 31st, 2017 by the Australian Government through the Australian Embassy to the people of Indonesia. This project could be realized also thanks to the Darwin International Festival and Australian-Indonesian Institute.
The Voyage to Marege' hopefully will be a 23-minute symphonic work, and after its premiere in Jakarta in August I will extend it after I deepen my knowledge on Aboriginal traditions and language for more performances next year in Australia. It is scored as a kind of concerto grosso, with a group of soloists of flute, didgeridoo player and songline singer. It depicts the relationship between the sailors & traders from Makassar (South Sulawesi) coming to the Northern Territory (Arnhem Land) of Australia in the 18th century up to the beginning of the 20th century. Thanks to my daughter Alicia Pirena for the videotaping and editing.
