STORYLINE:
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan met Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash in Paris on Friday in an effort to break the deadlock in the talks to end the 28-year-long division of the east Mediterranean island.
Annan was also due to meet with Greek Cypriot leader President Glafcos Clerides.
European Union plans to expand by the end of the year may hinge on the outcome of the reunification talks.
The latest round of UN-sponsored talks, which started in January, stalled over demands by Denktash for the recognition of his breakaway statelet in the occupied north that is only recognised by Turkey.
Recognition is ruled out by the UN Security Council, which calls for reunification as a single state made up of one Greek Cypriot and one Turkish Cypriot federal regions.
Turkey rejects the accession of Cyprus to the European Union before a settlement and before it itself joins, a development unlikely for many years.
