Movie legends John Wayne and Robert Mitchum only worked together in a western once. The film was director Howard Hawks’ EL DORADO, a comedic variation of his earlier classic, RIO BRAVO. Putting Duke and Mitch together gave the film a wild sense of fun that was followed by the director’s next, and final film, RIO LOBO. Once again Hawks had Wayne and Mitchum on screen together. However, this time it was not Big Mitch, but Chris, the younger acting son of the star. He was just beginning but Duke was so impressed with his performance that he asked the young actor if he would like to portray Duke’s son in his next western, BIG JAKE.
Of course, he said “Yes.” So did Duke’s son, Patrick, who had already made several films with his superstar Father, including the John Ford classic, THE SEARCHERS. On a cross country promotional tour for BIG JAKE, Patrick and Chris became close friends.
The two joined Rob Word on stage during the 2022 Lone Pine Film Festival to talk about their friendship, the fun they had working on the films and shared memories of both of their movie star Fathers.
