Three-quarters of animals in the ocean are bioluminescent, but in almost every case, we don’t know why. Scientists Henrik Glenner and Anders Garm joined OceanXplorer in Norway’s deepest fjord to investigate one kind of animal that makes its own light: a huge deep-sea starfish. They tested several theories using super sensitive cameras on our ROV and in the ship’s lab, trying to figure out just how bioluminescence helps these mysterious creatures survive, and how light like theirs may even have contributed to our own evolution.
