The Caledonian Sleeper is one of two rail sleeper services operating in the United Kingdom. It runs services between England and Scotland. The train connects London with Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Fort William and Inverness with stops to pick up and set down passengers along the routes. Services run every night Sunday - Friday.

Whilst the rooms may be a little (a long) way out of my price range the seated accommodation is more affordable. However, what is it like travelling long-distance, overnight train in a seat? The seated sleeper has had many bad reviews so I wasn’t expecting much.

Caledonian Sleeper makes use of the West Coast Main Line, a sleeper service having run along the West Coast Main Line since 24 February 1873.

In 2012, the Scottish Government announced that the Caledonian Sleeper would be operated by a separate franchise. In 2014, the franchise was awarded to Serco. The company pledged to invest £100 million in new trains that would include 'en suite' rooms and a new style of club car. Accordingly, the existing Mark 2 and Mark 3 coaching stock was to be replaced, originally set to occur by 2018 and replaced with Mark 5 coaching stock, On 31 March 2015, Serco Caledonian Sleepers took over the operation of the service.

On 25 June 2023 Caledonian Sleeper services transferred into public control and ownership. Sleeper services are now provided within the public sector, by an arm’s length company owned and controlled by the Scottish Government.

Serco Caledonian Sleepers Ltd staff transferred to the new Scottish Government owned operator, Caledonian Sleeper Ltd with their terms and conditions.

Caledonian Sleeper Ltd is owned and overseen by Scottish Rail Holdings Ltd (SRH Ltd), which is wholly owned by the Scottish Government. Caledonian Sleeper Ltd will continue to operate current Sleeper services.
