This is a guide on how YOU should gather living logs through the big four methods. 1. Chop Totally Normal Trees 2. Kill Treeguards 3. Have Bearger kill Treeguards 4. Poison Birchnut tree farm. Which uses Weather pains to execute the Poison Birchnut trees as soon as they spawn.

Living logs are a resource that always dwindles too early, as they are extremely useful for making dark swords and many other useful magic items. This is a guide on all the ways to gather living logs effectively.

First, the best way to get living logs at the start of the game is by looking for "Totally Normal Trees" they spawn in forest biomes and are easy to find due to the evil flowers spawning around them. The fastest way to find them normally is to run along the path through the forest using the speed boost to your advantage. Chopping it down gives two living logs, and digging up the stump gives one living log.

This is not enough for using dark swords constantly though, so the next best way to get living logs before day 72 is to chop Evergreen Trees and hope for a Treeguard, they have a 1.33% chance of spawning per tree chopped down after day three. They can also spawn in groups of two or three after day 30. They are an extremely easy enemy to kill by kiting, although they do have lots of health. They drop six living logs, which still is not enough.

After day 72, much better ways to farm living logs open up, the first way uses bearger to do your work for you. When he spawns, hit him, and run. Stay close, but out of the range of his attack to maintain his aggression. Then run to the nearest forest and have him chop down all the trees for you by baiting his attacks. This often spawns treeguards due to how many trees he is chopping down. The treeguards will also be aggressive to him, not you. Bearger will then fight the treeguard, and gather living logs for you. Usually he'll gather around 20 living logs for you before he dies from treeguards.

Then there is the poison birchnut tree farming method, which requires a weather pain. During Autumn in Don't Starve Together, after day 72, their spawn rate is 16.8% per tree chopped down. They can also spawn in groups. The reason you need a weather pain is because a Weather Pain tornado instantly kills a poison birchnut tree. Farming the poison birchnut trees is fairly easy, first plant a forest of birchnut trees. Chop some trees down until a poison birchnut tree spawns, then use the weather pain on it. It will then drop 1-2 living logs, with a 20% chance of two dropping. The stump can also be dug up for another living log. This is a fast method for getting living logs, but the weather pain itself is expensive. The best way to conserve resources from the weather pain is to deconstruct it at 7%, this will give you back the gear, one moose goose feather, and the volt goat horn. Here comes the math; this means you get 14 uses per weather pain, using up 9 moose goose feathers, each use of the weather pain gets 2.2 living logs (FACT CHECK HERE IF GROUPS SPAWN), 2.2x14 is 30.8 living logs, you can't have an 8th of a living log, so we'll round to 31 living logs. That means each moose goose feather is worth approximately 3.5 living logs. You get approximately 15 moose goose feathers per moose goose and mosling family killed. 15 feathers worth 3.5 living logs each is 52.5 living logs. Usually, 3-4 moose gooses will spawn per spring. That means you will get 157.5-210 living logs per year without using any other living log methods. Which is easily enough to use dark swords year round.
