Using proper etiquette to handle your handbag can actually help you avoid awkward encounters & essentially, can be a form of communication, in which displays your elegance & charming consideration for others.
The most important thing you can remember while dining anywhere, is that your bag should never be placed on top of the table. This applies to clutches, wallets, keys, & phones as well. No matter how special or beautiful or expensive your bag may be, placing it on top of the table is not only unhygienic but also considered extremely rude.
Placing your bag on the floor can be unhygienic as well, which makes the floor not a good option to place your bag either. When your bag is on the floor, items can easily fall out of it or it can easily be in the way of others passing by & may cause them to trip. Also, placing your bag on the floor is placing it out of your sight as well where it can be forgotten or taken.
Also while you are at the table, do not place your bag on the back or arm of your chair. Be mindful of your bag & those around you & know that when your handbag is placed on the back or arm of the chair, it may be in the way of those passing by & isn't as safe as it would be in your possession. This applies to all handbags, shoulder bags, tote bags & purses.
When you are dining, you may place your bag on an empty chair next to you at the same table you are at, if there is an empty seat available. However, do not bring a chair from another table to your table just for your bag. Remember to be courteous if someone would like to occupy the seat & move your purse to your lap so they make take a seat.
If there isn't an empty chair available at your table, you may place your bag on your lap or at the small of your back, in your seat behind you.
Handbag etiquette can also improve the way you socialize with others & this can be done simply by carrying your bag on your left side. This leaves your right hand & arm free to greet others so you may socialize with ease. Our right hand is our "social" hand, regardless of whether you are right handed or left handed. Therefore when we greet someone, we use our right hand to shake hands with them. When you carry your bag on your left side, this will let you greet others with your right hand easily, without having to awkwardly move your bag out of the way before shaking their hand. And always being eager & prepared to greet & socialize with others is very polite & will display your elegance. :)
To create a better environment for others & yourself, be mindful of your bag while you are in crowded areas. If you are carrying your bag on your shoulder, you may hold your bag down with your left arm while it's on your left shoulder. Or it's best to take it off of your shoulder & carry it in front you. This will let you navigate through crowds a bit more easily & keep your bag safe with you, while being considerate of others. Also, be mindful of others around you when you are putting your bag on your shoulder & taking it off of your shoulder. Look around you before swinging your bag over your shoulder, making sure your bag does not hit anyone who is near you.
Another handbag etiquette tip to remember while you are with others is to never ask someone if their handbag is real or how much it costs. Keep in mind, that unless they choose to share this information themselves, it is not polite to ask otherwise.
The finishing touch to having elegant handbag etiquette is to always treat your bag or purse with care & keep it clean. Just as taking care of ourselves is very elegant, a handbag that is well kept & in top condition is very elegant as well. Our bags are carried with us almost everywhere we go, which means they have collected so much dirt & bacteria along the way too. This is why it's so important to keep your bag clean and shut to complement your elegance & handbag etiquette.
These tips are small, but they do make a big difference - in the way you carry yourself, how you interact with others & make it easier for you to navigate through your day with elegance. Keep in mind that these are not rules, simply suggestions that can help make it easier for you to carry & handle your handbag in all occasions.
