The centuries of disunion between the fall of the Western Zhou Dynasty and unification by the Qin Dynasty are usually divided into the Spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period. It's one of the most interesting times in Chinese history. In this episode, I talk about how power struggle between aristocrats evolved into large-scale war between powerful states, how the culture of revenge, carried by wandering swordsmen, led to the emergence of collective punishment, and why this period of war and disunion was a golden age of Chinese philosophy. I also talk about the philosophy of Shang Yang, which some scholars have characterized as totalitarian, and which contributed to making the Qin state stronger than the other states.
