The protagonist, Winston Smith, is a low-ranking member of the ruling Party in London. The Party is led by Big Brother, who may or may not actually exist. The Party constantly watches all citizens through telescreens, and has created a new language, Newspeak, to control thought and ensure conformity. Winston, whose job is to rewrite history to align with the Party’s propaganda, becomes disillusioned with his life under the oppressive regime. He begins a forbidden relationship with Julia, a co-worker, and they rent a room above a shop in a prole (the lower class) neighborhood as a sanctuary for their affair. However, their rebellion is short-lived, as they are arrested by the Thought Police.
