STORYLINE:

The problem of domestic violence is rampant in Nicaragua - with one in four women also suffering sexual abuse.

Every year over 2,500 Nicaraguan women request police protection against their abusive husbands - with many of the requests coming from women who report domestic sexual assaults.

And the number could be much higher as authorities believe that only 4 out of 10 cases are reported.

The female police officers also give women advice and information on how to leave abusive relationships.
