So I'm going to demonstrate for you how to crochet your dreads. This can also be viewed as how to tighten up your dreads with a crochet hook, but I'm just going to give you a few pointers on what to do and what not to do. So when you're using a crochet hook with your dreads you definitely want to be sure that you have practiced on something that is not your hair, because what happens is what we're going to do, is we're going to tighten up the dread from the root, as if we did a twist and pin or a palm rolling, but we're going to do it with the crochet hook.
So what you're going to do is with Ayesha's hair, we're going to tighten up all this new growth here, clip this out of the way. So I'm going to first take my crochet hook, and this is a small size, you definitely want to use the smallest size as you can get your hands on. So I'm going to do a soft twist at the root, and then I'm going to go down the length of the dread, just about with the crochet hook. And what the crochet hook does is it pulls in the loose hairs to the inside of the dread. And as you go down with the crochet hook, you're going to be pulling that hair inside the dread and smoothing it out at the same time.
This is particularly-- this is actually more helpful on dreads that are a little thicker, because you definitely don't want to leave holes. That's why you want it to be something that you have practice with already, before you actually do it on your hair. You'll notice that as you go in and pull, you're pulling those loose hairs into the middle of the dread, and it kind of smooths out, and it kind of rounds the dread out. If you have dreads that are growing a little flat or two have combined together and you still have loose hairs around them, this would be a great method for that.
And as you can see the dread has kind of gone from being a little lumpier to being a little bit smoother with your crochet hook. And you've only done a soft twist. You didn't really twist or palm roll it too much and that is the beauty of crocheting. You just smooth down lightly and you see it's already locked and in place. And that's how you do the crochet method.
