Scores of people are feared to have been crushed to death at a Hindu religious gathering in the northern Indian city of Hathras.

The incident happened as people tried to leave the venue where crowds had gathered to celebrate the Hindu deity Shiva. District police put the death toll at about 60, but said the figure might rise, and local officials told India Today 107 people had died. Religious gatherings in India have a grim track record of deadly incidents caused by poor crowd management and safety lapses
