Akita dogs, chickens, and bears, oh my! It’s bear aware season in the Tohoku region of Japan, and today we’re in Akita, home to man’s furry best friends that share the same name (the Akita Inu dog), and apparently, lots and LOTS of bears 😬 - proof that Japan is not as safe as everyone says! Thankfully, today’s travel vlog is not all just about the dangers of wild bear encounters, though, because as well as warning the locals about the numerous bears in the area, we’re also trying one of Japan’s Top 3 Chicken varieties in a famous (and shockingly good) local hotpot dish and visiting some of Japan’s most stunning scenic views including the country’s deepest lake and the most acidic onsen hot spring town in Japan. Prepare yourself for a thrilling ride and some ruined travel plans in today’s Akita trip vlog!

A free visitor center in Odate City, Akita where you can learn all about Akita’s favourite furry friends (the Akita Inu) as well as Japan’s most beloved dog, Hachiko, an Akita dog born in Odate, who faithfully waited outside Shibuya Station in Tokyo for his owner to return from work every day for 9 years. The building is modelled on Shibuya Station of the Taisho Era and you can find the Yamanote Line information train outside, which has been transported all the way from Shibuya! But what’s more exciting is that you can also find a huge array of Akita dog souvenirs, from stuffed toys and T-shirts to food and beverages, and meet and greet the visitor centre’s very own resident Akita Inu dogs!

A “power spot” onsen resort known for its unique radioactive therapeutic properties and for being Japan's single most productive and acidic hot spring source with a pH of 1.2, which is lower than stomach acid! The onsen attracts both leisure tourists and cancer patients from across Japan due to the belief that the radioactive bedrock and steam vents have cancer and pain relieving properties and another unique characteristic of Tamagawa Onsen is that the hot spring’s ryokan inn has its very own resident nurse.
