Syncope- Causes And Treatment: By: Dr Prakash C.Malshe,M.D.

Transient loss of consciousness and fall on ground of a standing person is known as Syncope. There is a mechanism in the autonomic nervous system located in the Medulla oblongata which, when triggered, leads to sudden bradycardia or release of vasoconstrictor tone in the blood vessels of the lower limbs or both. The bradycardia is mediated by the Vagus nerve while inhibition of sympathetic tone to the blood vessels of the lower half of body occurs simultaneously. At other times the fall may be due to orthostatic hypotension which is either due to fluid loss/ blood loss or due to diseases of the autonomic nervous system. Diabetic autonomic neuropathy, autoimmune autonomic neuropathy or one of the inherited neuropathies. Drug induced syncope occurs with Alpha blockers, nitrates, diuretics and SGLT-2 inhibitors.
