A spectacled bear Aruma got his lunch. He crushes a coconut with big paws and eats it and drink milk from inside. His neighbour Tipnis prefer to eats it on her wooden platform.
The fictional children's character Paddington Bear is based on the Spectacled Bear.
Almost 8 years old Aruma and about 4,5 years old Tipnis are rescued Spectacled Bears, which live at La Senda Verde. During my volunteer at this Animal Refuge in Bolivia we used to feed them 3 times a day. Porridge, egg, apple and quark in the morning, fruits like watermelon or coconut or pineapple at noon and cornflakes and bread with honey in the aftrenoon. Watch this bears eating their coconut.
Andean bears are more herbivorous that most other bears. Only 5 -10 % of their diet consists of meat. The most common foods for these bears include cacti, palm nuts, bamboo hearts, fallen fruits on the forest floor. Like all bears have a sweet tooth and enjoy honey and heart of palm.
They have extremely strong jaws and wide, flat molars.
Andean Bears are largest predator found in south America, largest than a jaguar.
Exact numbers of bears in the wild are not known but latest studies put the numer at less than 10000 left in the wild. They are the last of the short snout bear species in the world.
