Puffing Billy Railway
Hello all,
Welcome to a Victorian heritage railway video where, as the year of 2023 rapidly approaches the end of the line, we visit Victoria's premiere Puffing Billy Railway one more time. Once again, the railway hosted the Polar Express as they operated the special for nine days, from the 9th to the 17th of December, 2023. Locomotive NG129 was once again styled up for the occasion, hauling a mixed rake of NBH and NQR carriages from Lakeside to Menzies Creek and return.
Each day of the season, there were two runs of the Polar Express. Passengers enjoyed activities and performances at both ends of the run, which were approximately 5 hours in duration.
Locomotive NG129 is a former South African Railways NG G16 class Garratt, which was a more prominent order of the successful NG G13 that entered service a few years earlier. NG129 was lovingly restored over a 20-year period, re-entering service in 2019.
This video is a little different to other Puffing Billy videos as it was captured over two days. The shots are aligned time-wise to the train position rather than being divided into the specific days. The first and last clips of each shuttle were captured on the first day, with the rest being captured the other day.
We begin the video in Lakeside where the train is moved from the Discovery platform to the main platform, then follow along for their trips to the North Pole.

The Puffing Billy Railway is Victoria’s most famous tourist railway. Located in the Dandenong Ranges, the railway is 15.6 miles (25.1 km) long, operating with their original locomotives from over 100 years ago. They operate regularly throughout the year, and also hold special events like the tour seen in this video.
