Drongo is a small arboreal bird.
We commonly see this familiar bird around us.
This bird has different names in our country.
It is locally known as ‘Hachchha’ bird in some regions.
It roams the fields, and forests.

Drongos are famous for whistling.
These birds can be 28-31 cm. long including the tail.
They can be easily identified with black color and a distinctive forked tail.
These birds are summer visitors in northeastern Afghanistan and northern Pakistan, but are also found in Indus Valley to Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Hong Kong and China.
There are about 24 species of Drongo found in the world, with Bangladesh being home to 6 of these.

Different types of Drongo can be found in this country.
They are Black Drongo, Ashy Drongo, Bronzed Drongo, Lesser racket-tailed Drongo, Hair-crusted Drongo, and Greater racket-tailed Drongo.
Both male and female birds are similar in look.

Although small in size, Drongos are known to be aggressive who fearlessly attack larger species than themselves.
Other small birds build their nest secretly around Drongos.
But the Drongos openly make a cup-shaped nest in the gap between the tree branches.

They lay 3-4 eggs at a time, which hatch after 14 to 15 days.
They are mainly insectivorous, and feed on insects, and sometimes small vertebrates like house lizards.
Drongo plays vital role in increasing crop production by feeding on harmful insects of the crop fields.
That's why they are commonly seen in crop fields.

The Drongos not only enhance the beauty of our nature, but also maintain the environmental balance by feeding on harmful insects.
Drongos are more common in rural areas than in cities.
Deforestation and the declining number of plants in the locality, and man-made reasons have made this bird threatened.
Perhaps Drongos will go extinct from our country in future, thanks to the adverse environment.
Therefore, we all have to be more aware and come forward to conserve these birds.
Only then our nature will be livelier with the presence of Drongos.
