Monza Circuit Exploring the Oval & Pirelli Track

In this Circuits of the past video you see the exploration of the old Monza banking and the Pirelli Track, by Herman Liesemeijer and Yuri Bruschi.

The banking they explore is actually the second version of the Monza banking, that opened in 1955. The original Monza Oval was demolished in 1938.

Monza Oval

The Monza Circuit opened in 1922 as a combination of a high speed banked oval and a road circuit. Both could be used together or sepparated. The length of the combined circuit was exactely 10 Kilometres, which is 6.2 Miles.

During a huge reconstruction of the track that started in 1938, the original banking was demolished. The idea was to make Monza a pure road circuit. However, in the 1950’s the circuit bosses wanted to return to it’s original concept of a combination of a road circuit and a high banked oval.

In 1955 the new Monza layout opened with a new oval, almost on the same site as the original. To give this circuit also the length of exactely 10 Kilometres, they introduced the famous Parabolica Corner.

Parabolica is Italian for parabolic. But some lazy reporters tell their audience that the Southern banking is the old Parabolica Corner, probably not aware of the meaning of the name Parabolica.

Actually, there is no old Parabolica Corner. The current Parabolica is the same as in 1955 and still on the same spot. Only the run off has been changed through the years.

The combination of the road circuit and the oval was used only 3 times for the Formula One Italian Grand Prix. That was in 1956, 1960 and 1961.

Actually the Monza banking became most famous afterwards, when it was used for the 1966 Formula One movie Grand Prix.

After Formula One abandoned the Monza banking, it was also found too dangerous for other series. The last time the full circuit was used was for the 1969 edition of the 1000 Kilometres of Monza. Since then, the old high banked oval was left abandoned.

When the Monza Circuit need to improve safety in the 1990’s they had to fell trees to create bigger run off areas. So they came up with a plan to demolish the disused banking, and use the space to replant trees. Just like they would do with old Hockenheim in 2002.

But after massive protest, among others by Formula One drivers, they cancelled the plan.

Since 1978 the old Monza Oval is used once a year by the Monza Rally. But only the lower part of the banking. The rest of the year it’s a memory from the past, which can be explored legally, like Herman and Yuri are doing in this video.

Pirelli Track

The Pirelli Track was built during the 1938 reconstruction of the Monza Circuit. It was meanth as a test track for the Italian tyre manifacturer Pirelli. The layout made usage of a part of the road circuit and a new loop on the infield.

However, because of the outbroke of World War Two the Pirelli Track was actually never used for it’s purpose. Today the infield section is left abandoned and can be explored by nostalgic set fans like us.

In 2016 the abandoned Pirelli Track was back in the spotlight when they came up with an alternative layout for the World Superbike Race. The new section should cut off the Curva Grande and make usage of a part of the old Pirelli Track. A new chicane should bring it back to the current track.

Rumors circulated on the Internet that old F1 boss Bernie Eccelstone would be interested in using this layout for Formula One as well. A massive protest arose under the slogan “Save Curva Grande”. However, the idea disappeared as quickly as it came.
