A ratio can be simplified by dividing both sides of the ratio by the Highest Common Factor (HCF). The highest common factor is the largest number that goes into both numbers of your ratio.

In example 1 you are asked to simplify the ratio 6:8. Here the HCF is 2 so divide both sides of the ratio by 2 to give 3:4.

In example 2 you are asked to simplify the ratio 40:70 Here the HCF is 10 so divide both sides of the ratio by 10 to give 4:7.

In the last example you are asked to simplify the ration 35:50 Here the HCF is 5 so divide both sides of the ratio by 5 to give 7:10.
