In this video, Tallulah and I will teach you how to train your pigeon to step up. This is a very simple training process that is a great way to start for anyone who is new training, or for any birds new to training. While it is somewhat unconventional to train a pigeon to step up, that is more often reserved for parrots, there are many benefits to both you and your bird that are well worth it.
Teaching a bird to step on to a hand is far less scary than the human grabbing them and this is a great way to interact with a newer or more nervous bird. Even with establish bird, by letting them choose to interact with you instead of being forced to through humans picking them up, it can have a beneficial impact on the relationship. By teaching them to step up, you have inadvertently both clicker and target train them, which will make any future training you want to do far easier. By having them trained to step up it will also be far easier if you wish to train them to come when called. Last but not least, training a bird is fun for both of you, and this gives you two an enjoyable activity to do together which will provide yet another way to improve your relationship.
You can do this training while the bird is in the cage if necessary, thought they will be more likely to get distracted so be prepared for that.
