Mother Teresa's body is now lying in state in one of Calcutta's main Roman Catholic  churches.

Her body was carried through city streets from the headquarters of her Missionaries of  Charity order to accommodate the throngs of Indians wanting to pay their final respects.
Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral visited the church to lay his own wreath by her body.

A state funeral is set for next Saturday.

One day after Princess Diana's coffin was carried past anguished mourners, Mother  Teresa departed her charity and passed alongside her distraught followers.

Mother Teresa's body was carried through the streets of Calcutta to a larger church,  Saint Thomas, where her countless admirers will be able to pay final respects.

Missionary nuns and altar boys carrying candles and a crucifix surrounded the open  coffin as pall bearers placed it in an ambulance for the journey to the church.

Mother Teresa will lie in state at the church, one of Calcutta's largest, for the next  week.

The nuns of her order decided the convent chapel at her headquarters was too small to  accommodate crowds.

Indian Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral was one of the first mourners to pay his own  tribute to a woman who did so much for the Indian people.

He has ordered a state funeral for Mother Teresa, an honour normally conferred only on  serving presidents and prime ministers.

Already by 0900 local time, mourners snaked a half mile along the sidewalk in front of  the church, in a fashionable Calcutta neighbourhood - a contrast to with slums she  dedicated her life to.

Many had words of praise for this remarkable woman, including the actress Sushmita  Sen - a former Miss Universe.

Mother Teresa, who retained her simplicity and humility despite an avalanche of  international fame, died on Friday after a heart attack.

She was born in Europe but became an Indian citizen during her six decades on the  subcontinent.

She had suffered heart problems and other ailments for years and gave up leadership of  her order in March.

The site of Mother Teresa's funeral has not been announced.

But she is expected to be buried at the convent in central Calcutta that was her home  and also formed the headquarters of her Missionaries of Charity order.
