In 1819 Stamford Raffles established Singapore as a trading post. The Dutch who controlled much of Indonesia saw this as a threat and protested.

The issue was settled by the Anglo-Dutch treaty in 1824. This treaty gave the British control of areas north of the Straits of Malacca and the Dutch control of areas south of the Straits.

In 1926 Singapore, Penang and Malacca were grouped together as the Straits Settlements under the control of the British East India Company.
In 1867 the Straits Settlements came under direct rule of the British, taking orders from the British Colonial Office.

The Straits Settlements was dissolved in 1946.
