Black History Facts - "Lift Every Voice and Sing" was initially written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson, a native of Jacksonville, Florida. In 1899, his brother, John Rosamond Johnson, set it to music. The song went on to become The Negro National Anthem. In honor of Black History Month, Amos P. Godby High School students are performing a customized version of the song. The first verse is arranged by Ms. Hutchins and the last verse is arranged by Roland M. Carter.
