Afghans, NGO workers recall their plight in Afghanistan

(18 Aug 2021) One of three Lufthansa flights carrying evacuees from Afghanistan arrived at Frankfurt Airport in Germany on Wednesday morning.
Evacuees are being flown from Kabul in military planes to airports in the region, from where commercial airliners are taking them to their final destination.
German citizen Vanessa Faizi fought back tears as she recounted the panic and chaos of recent days, trying to get to safety after the Taliban entered Kabul less than three weeks before the U.S. plans to complete its troop withdrawal.
Evacuee Mohamed Zaki spoke of the heartbreak of having to leave family back in Afghanistan, expressing his relief for being flown out, but adding that a part of him was still there with loved ones.
While most spoke of their desperation to get out, spokeswoman for Friedensdorf International Claudia Peppmüller said she already thought about returning to Kabul to continue her NGO work on repatriating children injured in the war.
Meanwhile, Germany had announced that the country will send up to 600 army personnel to Kabul to help evacuate German citizens and former Afghan local embassy staff.
Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Cabinet okayed the mission which started Monday.
Germany’s Bundestag Parliament will have to vote on the military mission, which is likely going to happen next week, as every armed foreign deployment of the German army has to be approved by parliament.
Normally this has to happen before the start of the deployment but in this case, because of the imminent danger German citizens were exposed to in Afghanistan, Cabinet and parliament will be allowed to approve the mission in retrospect, German news agency dpa reported.
