Relaxed explanation of what oral and genital herpes is and what it is caused by from a sexual health doctor.
Herpes is caused by the Herpes Simplex virus (HSV). HSV type 1 typically causes coldsores, HSV type 2 typically causes genital herpes. As oral sex is common types 1 and 2 can be found around the mouth, genitals or anus.
While it might be life long with no cure it can be treated with aciclovir tablets and the ulcers can be soothed by salt water wash/bath. 90% of the world's population aged over 50 have some form herpes and 80% of them don't even know they have it.
testing is simple, usually with a swab. Blood tests are useful if you are pregnant and it's your first outbreak, otherwise blood tests are considered to be a waste of money. If it's positive it won't tell you when you caught it, if it's negative is it a true result. sometimes blood tests can be useful so speak to your local sexual health doctor. Please remember 90% of the population will eventually catch HSV, 80% don't know they have it..... is it worth having a blood test?
