भारत पाकिस्तान के बीच Kargil war में लड़ने वाला हर एक सिपाही देश का hero था. लेकिन कुछ योद्धा ऐसे थे जिन्होंने अपने साहस और बलिदान से मिसाल कायम की. जिसके लिए उन्हें सेना का सर्वोच्च सम्मान Param Vir Chakra से सम्मानित किया गया. Kargil की लड़ाई के दौरान 4 बहादुरों को परम वीर चक्र के सम्मानित किया गया है, लेकिन चारों वीर सैनिकों में इस सम्मान को खुद अपने हाथों से प्राप्त करने वाले वे एक मात्र सैनिक हैं और उनका नाम है राइफलमैन Sanjay Kumar.
Himachal Pradesh के बिलासपुर जिले से भारतीय सेना में भर्ती हुए राइफलमैन (अब सूबेदार) संजय कुमार ने कारगिल की लड़ाई के दौरान संजय कुमार ने जिस साहस और बहादुरी से दुश्मन का खात्मा किया उसकी मिसाल दी जाती है.

The Indian Army soldier and a Junior Commissioned Officer, Subedar Sanjay Kumar, was the recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military award for his gallantry in the 1999 Kargil War.
He belonged to 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles and was awarded PVC in 1999 after the conclusion of war. Rifleman Kumar indulged in hand-to-hand combat with Pakistani intruders during an operation to capture a point in the Mushkoh Valley. The brave Indian soldier even chased the enemy, using their machine gun and killed many of them.
Sanjay was only 23 when he was awarded the PVC, an honour bestowed only on 21 soldiers since 1950.
