When we experience intense emotions, especially of the negative kind, there is a robust tendency to desire that they would cease to affect us. Whether it is anxiety, anger, stress, or despair the thoughts are usually the same, "if only I did not feel this emotion, then perhaps I would be better off," or "if only I were emotionless, then perhaps everything would be much better."

Today's discussion explores this question, should we become emotionless? In other words, should we attempt to forgo any emotion in order to prevent the distressing sensations that accompany these emotions from arising? While this idea might be appealing at first glance, it inevitably becomes fatally flawed when it is scrutinized more closely. Emotions are a key facet of our being and many of the values, goals, and ambitions we possess would not carry as much significance if we lacked a capacity for emotions.
