The 50th chapter of the Quran begins with the Arabic letter qaf. It's not clear what the letter signifies, but commentators of the Quran came up with a number of theories. One idea is that Qaf is an emerald mountain that surrounds the earth, and on which the sky rests. In one commentary, a person encounters Qaf and has an extended conversation with the mountain. This fantastical narrative relies on cosmology that is foreign to the Quran. Dr. Shabir Ally says that without classical commentaries on the Quran, we would be at a loss to understand the Quran, but we should be aware that the scholars were operating in a milieu that is very different from ours, and they had thoughts and ideas that were acceptable to them which are not acceptable to us.
